Beauty Ranch and the Jack London Cottage

After visiting the museum, Wolf House and Jack London's grave, I walked the mile back to where he actually lived from 1905 to 1916. Jack London was one of the first "Back to the Landers". His novel, Valley of the Moon pretty much describes why. He wanted his socialist paradise now, and got tired of the class struggle.

He was interested in "scientific farming". Essentially, organic farming. He used horses and used the manure for fertilizer. Ahead of his time with his sustainability. He also met quite a few disasters--not only did the Wolf House burn, but the pigs in his Pig Palace all died. His cows didn't prosper on cactus developed by Luther Burbank. He took all of his considerable fortune and put it into his Ranch. I can relate...

Multiple buildings on the ranch, below is the "Sherry building". The ranch was a winery up until Jack London bought it. I liked the tin roof on the building...

This is the house where he lived. I got there too late to tour the inside. The stone building is where he entertained the considerable amount of guests, including Emma Goldman and Sinclair Lewis (amongst others). Lots of Bohemian folks visited his Ranch. They liked to party...

Jack London's sleeping porch and offices... where he died.

Another view...

I peered in through the window...this is where (I think) Jack took his overdose and spent his last night...
